Islay Whisky Classics No.5 – Bunnahabhain Feis Ile 1965

Way back in 2001 when bottle chasers were unknown and nobody had heard of E-bay , Bunnahabhain released their very first Feis Ile bottling , a 35yo From Sherry butt no.7159 . Distilled on the 1st November 1965 and bottled on the 4th April 2001 at an abv of 53.9% , i picked this bottle up at Fenwicks department store in Newcastle for the princely sum of £95 !

Bunnahabhain Feis Ile 1965

Only one of 594 bottles , it is a glorious mahogany colour , The nose is exactly what you’d expect , Surprisingly not over-powering sherry , it’s there but the spiciness and christmas cake keeps it in check . A gentle giant on the nose . The palate is sherried but with vanilla , dried fruits ,   Cola Cubes sweets ,and a touch of peat , glorious ! The finish is where the sherry hits home a bit more along with a tad a spiciness and a touch pepper .

An absolute stunner of a Bunnahabhain , a bottling which totally changed my opinion of this remote distillery and which led to me delving deeper into the output of this much underrated Islay .
