In the good ol’ days you used to be able to pick up old whisky at reasonable prices , like these Signatory 1967 Ardbegs , i got this one from Robertsons of Pitlochry for £150…..
Distilled on March 22nd 1967 , this spent 30 years in an Oloroso butt (#1138) and was bottled on the 24th March 1997 at an abv of 52.2% producing 580 bottles (this is bottle No.73) . A beautiful polished mahogany colour in the glass , it has a captivating nose of oloroso sherry , dried dark fruits ( currants , sultanas ) , marzipan and old leather bound books which interplays with wafts of smoke from time to time . It is still quite nose prickling for its age . The palate is very dry , very oloroso sherry , it is loaded with christmas spices and pepper , there’s also the Ardbeg smokiness , it’s interesting the way the Oloroso comes to the front one moment and then the smokiness of the spirit does the next ! The finish is hot , dry and peppery along with the dry sherry .
What can you say about this ? It’s very unlikely we’ll see anything like this again or if we did we wouldn’t be able to afford it ! An absolute killer Ardbeg that i’m glad i managed to get a bottle of .
