Islay Whisky Classics No.23 – Bunnahabhain 12yo (46.3%)

In our last year of staying in the Bunnahabhain Distillery Cottages in 2010 , Burns Stewart decided in their wisdom to change a few things with the Bunnahabhain Whisky  , luckily for us it was all the right things , upped the ABV to 46.3% , dropped the colouring and stopped chill filtering it !  They also changed the packaging as well , so what’s the all new XII like ?

Bunnahabhain 12yo 46.3%

Light Amber in colour , it’s definitely more oily in the glass , there’s more of a pronounced sherry nose – i was worried about this as when LFW reviewed it Richard mentioned the dreaded ‘S’ word  but we’re safe – huge christmas cake with the Bunna Confectioners Sugar / Edinburgh Rock , that extra 6.3% on the nose makes all the difference ! The palate is still quite light but the sweetness seems more pronounced at first , loads of dark fruits and malt  . The finish is definitely longer , bags of sweetness , sherry , malt…… Wonderful !

A good dram made even better by upping the abv and leaving it natural !
