Last night at the Victoria Whisky Festival the results of the 2014 Canadian Whisky Awards were announced , Among the top awards were a life time achievement for John K Hall from Forty Creek Distillery and the Whisky of the Year went to Collingwoods 21yo Rye .
A Happy and Prosperous 2015 to all our regular visitors !
At this present time we should have been concluding another visit to Islay but due to a nasty little bug i’ve been laid up in bed all Holiday season and we ended up having to cancel our planned trip at the last moment . Seeing we now probably won’t be returning to Islay until about mid-2016 at the earliest now i’ve decided to change the blog slightly and move away from the Islay visits a touch , don’t worry any Islay visits in the future will still be reported here and all the old reports won’t vanish ! It isn’t really too hard to do as i tend to post more tasting notes , other visits etc more here now anyway , especially seeing Johanna has created such a travel monster ! LOL!!!
So basically i’ve renamed the blog (The inspiration for it came from a bit of Twittering from my good friend in Canada Gerald/@G2Whisky back in October- Cheers Mate !) and got a new URL http://thewhiskyodyssey.net – the old islayvisits.net will still get you here till sometime in May .
So what does this Year hold in store for us ? Who knows! Well there will be a mega Canadian tasting extravaganza shortly and a return to Toronto for a more concise examination of their Whisky Gala !
It would appear that Islay is going to get a 9th Distillery !
According to a posting on The Whisky Advocate Blog it will be at Gartbreck Farm just outside Bowmore . To read the full report CLICK HERE
Within hours the internet was awash with it . Then Armin from The Islay Blog turned detective and found the company had been registered since May with Jean Donnay from the Glann ar Mor Distillery named as director ( See here ) . Then Joel from Caskstrength found that the web address gartbreck.com had been registered in July 2012 by Martine Rochard Donnay !
So the next question is will we get to double figures ? I think so , Bruichladdichs Port Charlotte Distillery still has planning permission……
Recently BBC Scotland screened an incredible 4 Part Wildlife Series that included my favourite part of Scotland , The Isle of Islay . Now it is to get a Network Broadcast on BBC Two and BBC Two HD from Thursday 11th July at 9pm . Parts 1-3 work there way up from the Inner Hebrides to the Outers covering a full year , Part 4 concentrates on the people who live and work amongst the wildlife . The Photography is outstanding throughout with some breath taking footage (Watch out for the White Tailed Eagles !) .
Over the original screenings it was great to be able to exchange views on twitter with the people involved , Nigel Pope – the Exec Producer (@nigpope) , The Production Company Mara Media (@mara_media) and one of the Film makers John Aitchison (@JohnAitchison1) . throughout the broadcast of the series they used the Hashtag #BBCHebrides .
If you are a fan of Islay and the Hebrides this is a must watch Programme ! We’re looking forward to watching it again as it will lead nicely up to our Summer visit to Islay and our treks and wildlife watching . If you can’t wait there are clips available on the BBC website at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p014g3q2/clips and theres a whole section on the BBC site about it at Hebrides Islands on the Edge Page .
So just to remind you BBC Two / BBC Two HD 9pm from Thursday 11th July !
The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.
Here’s an excerpt:
600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 12,000 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 20 years to get that many views.
For a little while now i’ve been looking at adding a forum to this blog , mainly due to the amount of correspondence lately on the blog , thought it would be nice to have somewhere to chat properly . Unfortunately WordPress.com doesn’t allow it . then i had a brainwave , why not be green and recycle (ok i know, not quite…) the old Locked down Spirit of Islay one ? So i have ! Slightly renamed it , cleaned out a few out of date threads , reorganised it a bit and bingo ! So now we have…….
Just click on the picture above or go to http://spiritofislay.myfreeforum.org/ , i know you’ve got to register but if it was open it would soon be full of spam ! You should see how much i’ve got to clear out of this and my other Blog…….
Just found an interesting new page on theWalkHighlandsSite , a guide to walks on Islay and Jura . Only Islay ones listed at the moment but well worth a look if you’re heading to the Queen of the Hebrides and are interested in doing a few walks . The direct link to the Islay page is Islay Walks
